2018 THEME: Your Health is My Health
DATE: August 12th-18th, 2018
You are reading this because you are alive. You are alive because you have sound health. you have sound health because you have been conscious of your life style, whereas this positive life style of yours is worthy of knowing and inculcating by others only if you can pass it unto another person.
If you agree to the statement above, I am calling on you to participate in the 2018 African Volunteering Week by contributing your skills and resources positively to the sound health of someone or group of people around you through volunteering.
This year African Volunteering Week (AVW) theme is: Your health is my health. We are promoting good public health practices owing to the numerous health challenges Africans are facing – malaria, Maternal newborn child health, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDs, measles, cholera, typhoid, yellow fever, malnutrition, bird flu, poliomyelitis etc. which can be prevented if we imbibe sound healthy behaviours
Most of these are either transmissible, communicable or non-communicable disease and they can be prevented if we imbibe sound personal hygiene, tidy environment and take in balanced diet.
The health of people around you and your environment largely contribute to your health and that’s why it’s important you participate in this year volunteering. As little as bringing children in your compound together to enlighten them the importance of hand wash/personal hygiene together with preventive measures, bringing your colleagues at office, church or mosque to clean a location like IDP centers, public facilities (garage, schools) etc. will go a long way in volunteering this year.
In fact, you can visit orphanage/disability homes to motivate them to boost their mental health, visit garage or market to enlighten drivers or market women respectively on preventive public health tips, go on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram to organise a live chat/twitter dialogue to educate people on your timeline on healthy behavioural pattern… just to mention few, posterity will surely reward you for contributing positively to the health of someone or people around you.
African Volunteering Week comes up every year from August 12 – 19 and anyone who has the skills or knowledge around our theme is free to volunteer his/her time, skills and resources to empower African or any Africa society provided it will be impactful positively.
You want to know how you can volunteer and your reward, read on…
