Is the rise in the youth population in the world a blessing or curse? Is it an advantage to the socio-economic development of your society? In spite of several youth protest, riot, unrest and aggression in the world, how many has finally translated into better education, good leadership, social inclusion, more and better job?
These are questions that bothered the mind of Topsie Olatilewa E. and Rasak Adekoya has they launch a campaign #BrandYourWaithood against this menace with the aim of finding solution to it.
Youth have been denied from future opportunities, restricted from social, economic and political participation has a result of bad governance, defective leadership and a non inclusive policy. Chronologically, they have marked the status of youth by their age, but they are yet to live the responsibility of adulthood: earn living, provide for their offspring’s, establish families, pay taxes etc. this delayed period or waiting period for transitioning from childhood to adulthood is known as Waithood.
Waithood is a stagnation period in the lives of young people as they transition from childhood to adulthood, a state of helplessness and dependency. Waithood is a global phenomenon that has been transcending from one generation to another that needs a localized solutions. And finding solution to it on a broad landscape is the core objective why the “#BrandYourWaithood” campaign is established.
The thematic focus of this advocacy is to ensure youth and adult, innovatively engage themselves with disruptive solutions to bringing about better socio-economic future for this generation and others to come.
We hope to provide Inclusive Solution in,
- Waithood in Career;
- Waithood in Education;
- Waithood in Social Inclusion
- Waithood in Leadership & Politic
We will also be implement strategic 6 E’s Innovative Solution Framework – Education, Empowerment, Engagement, Enlightenment, Employability, Entrepreneurship.
Rarely can you see anyone right now, in Africa or most developing part of the world who is not going through waithood. You see people finding it difficult to access affordable quality education, thereby finishing tertiary education at age 25-30. You see youth finding it difficult to choose a career path to choose owing to lack of mentorship and leadership guidance when they were transitioning from childhood to teenager. Unemployment is rising faster than imagination, thus social vices like terrorism, hooliganism and gangsters is on a high speed than that of light. Undoubtedly, today’s youth are active, but they lack relevant skills to meet the challenge at work space. Many are not brought up with the mindset of becoming an entrepreneur out of what they know. And for few who are willing to, the environment is not business friendly. While men can try to resist and stand against this cankerworm, women find it difficult to resist waithood.
Inability for many not to get access to quality education and make a living, they venture into prostitution, exchange their body to make living from sugar daddy, which mostly lead to diseases, unwanted pregnancy and single parenting. The worst of it, is the social exclusion most youth find themselves in their society. Is it that of persons with disability? Where society denied them social, economic and political opportunities. The same thing is applicable to youth being excluded from becoming part of policy making that will shape their future.
Rather than youth protest, unrest, aggression leading to anarchy, it is time youth change their mindset and strategy of tackling waithood if we don’t want it to transcend to upcoming generation. It is time for youth to fully participate in politics and change the landscape of governance by aspiring for both executive and legislative position. It is time for you as a youth to rise in becoming the leaders of today not leaders of tomorrow, from business to political, technology, cultural ambassadors etc. What differentiate one generation from another is responsibility they shouldered on themselves. It is as a result of what they do with what they know not with what they say and how this change their social, economic and political emancipation.
The time is now to put end to the incessant complain on marginalization. Truly, nothing for us without us is for us. But, no one will make the future we want if we fail to take lead and make our future now.
Let’s come together to campaign for change and not complain about change. Let’s proffer solution to our problem. Let’s be active participant in every sector of life. Let’s congregate not on the basis of tribe, ethnicity or religion.
Together with you, we can create the change we want. We can make create more and better job. We can ensure quality, affordable and accessible education by inputting solution for policy makers. We are a critical thinkers. We’re skilled communicator, let our voice be heard not only by protesting. The dynamics of our creativity has never been witnessed by any generation. Let’s put to use our computational thinking in solving our problems. You are an integral enterprise in the Nigeria, African and the rest of the world project.
Are you ready to #brandyourwaithood?
Yours in service.
